Parsifal by Richard Wagner is a music drama that is as strange as it is enigmatic.
A secret society of knights are desperately waiting for a saviour in a Castle that their King Titurel has built on mountain Montsalvat where they guard sanctuaries and the holy grail.
Opposing it on the same mountain is Klingsor's magic castle. An evil magician, he has devised a garden peopled by Flower Maidens whom were trained to seduce the Knights of the Grail. The naive young Parsifal is able to resist these temptations and his innocence leads him to rescuing a holy Spear from Klingsor, destroying his kingdom and saving the grails society as its new king. The world I created for these opposing worlds is dominated by a perspective of space like a tunnel- an inside world with a view of the outside for the grail society versus the actual outside world that looks like a deserted 19th century metropolis for Klingsors place. With projections on the whole set we enhance the impression of an endless tunnel and the journey that is described in Wagners’ suggestive and mesmerizing music.
