For Puccinis most renown, last opera that he set in ancient china, i developed a versatile, yet simple and mostly abstract set- a dark cube on the turning stage that is a metaphor for the emperors reign. Vivid, golden and glossy surfaces and thousands of destroyed ancient chinese Vases symbolize the situation that we witness. Inside there is a black as well as a golden inner space that is at first divided by a moving wall that for the third act is taken out to combine these two spaces as one that gradiates from black to gold. Being able to create different sceneries with the turning stage and the moving wall, we show a fascinating continuum of different spaces depicting transient spaces that oscillate between power and privacy.
