Two households, both alike in dignity- who wouldn´t know this first line of Shakespeares dramas´ prologue. The Story has been widely adapted for drama, film, musical, opera and of course, ballet.
In this neoclassical ballet by Stijn Celis, fencing, pas de deux, balls and carnival alternate each other in breathtaking tempo and virtuosity. Shakespeare's „Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy“ tells the story of Romeo and Juliet, two lovers that cannot come together due to their families´ feud. Prokofiev's famous grand orchestra score from teh 1940s has also become a modern classic, telling each scene of the play in an illustrated, evocative manner. For this evening, i created a minimalist, yet simply changeable scenography in an almost abstract, white color and shape. Enormous  architectural silhouettes of archways and columns can create the different venues of the story that is originally set in Verona, Italy. An ultra subtle lighting by Christian Kass creates different atmospheres that enhance the experience of the dance as well as the space.
